SCHELD

SCHELD

SCHELD (Science, Culture, History, and English Language Development) is a program designed to improve student achievement in the elementary grades through a three step process:
  1. Developing high-quality, interdisciplinary curriculum units based on state standards in social science, science, and language arts
  2. Developing leadership skills of participating teachers through coaching, presentation of curriculum, and supporting colleagues
  3. Teaching a summer school program in the morning and participating in related professional development in the afternoon

With funds from the Eisenhower Grant Program through the California Postsecondary Education Commission, two regions in the state are implementing this three-year program. SCHELD North is based at UC Santa Cruz, and works with school districts in the Monterey Bay area. SCHELD South is based at UC San Diego and has partnered with Warner Unified, Poway Unified, and South Bay Union School Districts.

Participating Teachers will Receive:

  • Time and resources to develop exemplary curriculum units
  • Content guidance from distinguished UCSD faculty
  • On-site support for teaching these units-in summer school and during the 2003-2004 regular school year
  • Intensive focus on effective strategies for English Language Learners
  • Training in academic coaching in order to support colleagues
