SCHELD (Science, Culture, History, and English Language
Development) is a program designed to improve student achievement in the
elementary grades through a three step process:
- Developing high-quality, interdisciplinary curriculum units based on
state standards in social science, science, and language arts
- Developing leadership skills of participating teachers through
coaching, presentation of curriculum, and supporting colleagues
- Teaching a summer school program in the morning and participating in
related professional development in the afternoon
With funds from the Eisenhower Grant Program through the California
Postsecondary Education Commission, two regions in the state are
implementing this three-year program. SCHELD North is based at UC Santa
Cruz, and works with school districts in the Monterey Bay area. SCHELD South
is based at UC San Diego and has partnered with Warner Unified, Poway
Unified, and South Bay Union School Districts.
Participating Teachers will Receive:
- Time and resources to develop exemplary curriculum units
- Content guidance from distinguished UCSD faculty
- On-site support for teaching these units-in summer school and during
the 2003-2004 regular school year
- Intensive focus on effective strategies for English Language Learners
- Training in academic coaching in order to support colleagues
